Pinworms are tiny (one-half-inch), white, threadlike roundworms found primarily in the colon and rectum. They enter the body when pinworm eggs are swallowed. The eggs subsequently hatch in the small intestine.

Tapeworms and hydatid disease
The term ‘tapeworm' describes a group of parasitic worms that live in the gut of animals, including humans. These infestations are found worldwide.

Pinworms are described as tiny, white, thread-like worms that can live in the bowels. Children under the age of ten years old are extremely susceptible to these types of worms but they can affect adults. They are not harmful and easily treatable.

Pinworms are little white worms about one quarter to one half inch in length. They live in the intestines.
How do they occur?

Hookworms are small, thread-like worms that burrow into the intestinal wall and consume blood. They are most commonly found in warm climates. There are numerous species of hookworms capable of infecting mammals, including humans.

If pinworms are suspected, transparent adhesive tape (often called the "scotch tape test") or a pinworm paddle (supplied by your health care provider) are applied to the anal region.

Threadworms, sometimes known as pinworms, are white and look like a small piece of thread. The adult female worm can be 8-13mm long, and the male worm 2-5mm long. Adult worms live for up to six weeks.

The nematode worms Capillaria spp and Gongylonema ingluvicola infect the mucosa of the crop and oesophagous of poultry and game birds. Some have beetle or earthworms as intermediate hosts.

Seafoods are the principal sources of human infections with these larval worms. The adults of A. simplex are found in the stomachs of whales and dolphins. Fertilized eggs from the female parasite pass out of the host with the host's feces.

Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) kills microfilariae and a variable proportion of adult worms. The DEC dose in patients with heavy microfilaremia is 50 mg po on day 1, 50 mg po tid on day 2, 100 mg po tid on day 3, then 2 mg/kg tid on days 4 to 14.
