Herpes Zoster
Description
Herpes zoster, also called shingles, and referred to as "zosteer", gets its name from both the Latin and French words for belt or girdle and refers to belt-like skin eruptions that may occur on the trunk of the body.

 


Herpes zoster: Also called shingles, zona, and zoster. The culprit is the varicella-zoster virus. Primary infection with this virus causes chickenpox (varicella).

Herpes Zoster (Shingles)
The varicella-zoster virus also travels to nerve cells called dorsal root ganglia. These are bundles of nerves that transmit sensory information from the skin to the brain.

Herpes zoster is caused by the same virus that causes varicella, Herpesvirus varicellae.
A primary infection with varicella does not result in its complete removal from the body. Some virus remains in nerve ganglia.

Zoster Sine Herpete. Sometimes pain develops without a rash, a condition known as zoster sine herpete. This usually occurs in elderly patients.
