This small terrier was originally bred as a hunter of vermin, foxes and badgers. Scottish Terriers possess a dignified air about them, and are much stronger than they look.

 


The breed was first called the Aberdeen Terrier, after the Scottish town of the same name. Like many other long-low breeds, the Scottie was used to hunt den animals, particularly otter, fox, badger and rabbit.

History: Originally known as the Aberdeen Terrier after the Scottish city, they were originally bred with the purpose of dispelling vermin. The Scottish Terrier is the best known and possibly oldest of the Highland terriers.

The Scottish Terrier or Scottie was once known as the Aberdeen Terrier, after the Scottish city. Like the Cairn, it was bred with the express purpose of dispelling vermin. The Scottie has existed for many centuries and taken many different forms.

Also known as the Scottie Dog and Aberdeen Terrier, the Scottish terrier is a strong, sturdy, compact little dog that has its own unique and distinctive profile and shape.

The Scottie as we know it was originally called the Aberdeen Terrier because it was developed in and around Aberdeen Scotland in the latter part of the 19th century.

The Scottish Terrier was known as Aberdeen Terrier, from the Scottish region, where he was most bred. At that time each region bred it´s own type of Terrier, although there was some mix and matches.

They were originally bred in Scotland (their first name was the Aberdeen Terrier) about 1700, but had achieved their final size and shape by 1890.

The first Scottish Terrier, initially called the “Aberdeen Terrier' can be traced back to Aberdeen, Scotland over one hundred years ago.

Originating in Scotland approximately 500 years ago, the Scottish Terrier or "Scottie" was originally called the Aberdeen Terrier. In the late 1800s, the Scottish Terrier began to take on more of the modern day Scottie characteristics.

The Scottish Terrier (also called the Scotty, Scottie, and the Aberdeen Terrier) is a bold, alert, robust, fearless and loyal dog. A working dog, it was originally bred in Great Britain to hunt foxes and badgers.

In fact, for a time the breed was known as the Aberdeen terrier. In 1860, the Scottish terrier was first shown, however even into the 1870s, there was immense debate over the exact characteristics of the breed.

The Aberdeen area favored this breed and it was almost documented as the Aberdeen Terrier. There were protests circling this creed that ultimately led to a detailed description of what actually makes a dog a Scottish Terrier.

Of the several short-legged, harsh-coated terriers, the dog now known as the Scottish terrier was most favored in the Aberdeen area, and so for a time she was called the Aberdeen terrier.

The Scottie makes a good watch-dog as it soon recognizes its territory and will bravely defend it against intruders.
