The Akita is one of the family of northern Spitz breeds and its development in Japan can be traced back to Akita Province in the 17th century.

Akitas have a straight, harsh outercoat and a soft, dense undercoat. Regular brushing is required to keep the coat looking neat, particularly during periods when the coat sheds.

Akitas are a large breed, not a giant breed. They are excellent house dogs. They require only a moderate amount of exercise. Akitas are known to be very quiet dogs, only barking "when there is something to bark about".

The Akita is perhaps the most renowned and venerated of the native Japanese breeds.

The Akitas history dates back nearly 40 years. The Akita is the largest of the spitz breeds and on of seven Japanese pure breeds that have been declared a national monument Primarily, the Akita is a working dog.

The Akita is a tough, robust fellow, needing firm, loving discipline. He can be obstinate and reacts against harsh methods. The breed cannot be forced but, once shown what is desired, he is quite cooperative.

Coat: The Akita is a double coat, waterproof breed. The outer coat is harsh, straight, and stands slightly off the body. The under coat is dense, soft, and close to the body.

Description
Most of the native dogs of Japan are of the classic northern type. They have square bodies, wedge-shaped heads, small upright ears, short, thick stand-off coats, and the tail is curled up over the back.

Akita Appearance
The breed stands 24 to 28 inches at the withers (60 to 71 cm). Females weigh anywhere from 70-110 pounds. Males are 85-130 pounds. Akitas come in three colours: white, brindle, and red and white (called red). In the U.S.

Akitas have short-coat, dense fur in two distinct layers. Akita's will "blow" their coat profusely twice a year, as well as occasional shedding in between. The tail is large and full and often carried curled up and over the back.

Akitas are most striking and impressive creatures with an attitude of nobility and an appearance of strength and power.

The Akita is a large and powerful dog with a noble and intimidating presence. He was originally used for guarding royalty and nobility in feudal Japan. The Akita also tracked and hunted wild boar, black bear, and sometimes deer.
