(St Bernard, Alpine Mastiff, Bernhardiner, St. Barnhardshund) The Saint Bernard is a powerful, large-sized dog with a strong, muscular build and a commanding presence.

Saint Bernards or Alpine Mastiffs are very large and extremely gentle. They are very loyal, highly intelligent and is a good watchdog and tend to drool after eating or drinking.

The monastery developed the breed and called them Alpine Mastiffs, initially. Edwin Landseer forever immortalized the Saint Bernard as well as created a false rumor in a single painting he made when he was 17.

Crossed with the local alpine native breed our hero gave birth to extremely popular Saint Bernard, whose other (less popular) name is - Alpine Mastiff.

The Saint Bernard is also known as the Alpine Mastiff and the St. Bernhardshund.

Known by many names: Hospice Dogs, Alpine Mastiffs, Barry Dogs, etc., agreement on the name ‘St. Bernard' was finally reached in 1880. The dogs were first imported into Britain in 1820 and the first English breed standard was written in 1887.
