It has been suggested that the German Shepherd Dog, or Alsatian, may be a descendant of the Bronze Age wolf. Certainly, around the 7th century, there existed in Germany a shepherd dog of similar type but with a lighter coat.

The German Shepherd Dog, also known as Alsatian, was developed in Germany by Captain Max von Stephanitz in the late 1800s and early 1900s by crossing short-haired, long-haired and wire-haired shepherd dogs from Bavaria, Thurginia and Wurtemberg.

"American Eskimo Dog" became the official breed name during World War I, when an reference to Germany was considered anathema in the Allied Nations. In England, the German Shepherd Dog became the Alsatian; in this country, ...

At the same time, the American Kennel Club (AKC) chose to alter the name of the breed from German Sheepdog to Shepherd Dog, while Britain renamed it the Alsatian Wolfdog -- both in an attempt to separate the breed from its German roots.

The truth is that its a more recently developed breed and is not related closer to a wolf then any other breed of dog. It was at one time called the Alsatian Wolfdog, but this caused many people to fear the dog, so the name was dropped.

At the same time, the AKC changed the breed's name from German Sheepdog to Shepherd dog, and Britain changed it to Alsatian Wolf Dog, both attempts to dissociate the dog from the unpopular German roots.

But English sheep herders did not want to get rid of the useful dogs, therefore they called them Alsatians, because they originated in Alsace. Finally after 40 years, in 1971, the British Kennel Club allowed the name to be German Shepherd Dog again.

In Britain, the name was changed to Alsatian wolf dog. The reason for the name changes was to separate the dog from its unpopular German heritage. Eventually the name wolf dog was dropped out of fear that people began to have of the breed.
