The breed was developed in the 20th century in the Ariege region of the Pyrenees where they were used especially for hunting. This primarily hunting dog weighs 55 to 66 pounds and stands at 24 to 26 inches tall.

Ariege is a province in France and this is where the dog was developed, back in the 19th century. A popular alternate name of the dog is Braque de L'Ariege. The special skills of this dog include hunting, pointing and retrieving.
