Australian Shepherds are a truly versatile breed. Not only are they agile working dogs, they are also extremely intelligent animals and wonderful family companions.

Australian Shepherds are easy going, perpetual puppies that love to play. Courageous, loyal and affectionate, they are excellent children's companions that are great with active children.

Australian Shepherds are vigorous, well-proportioned and rustic dogs-a little longer than tall. Their slightly domed heads and medium-length muzzles are about the same length, with almond-shaped eyes that can be blue, brown or amber.

Australian Shepherds are members of the American Kennel Club (AKC) Herding Dog Group.

Australian Shepherds are playful, easygoing companions. They are wonderful pets for children due to their gentleness and high energy level. This breed is very intelligent, loyal, and eager to please. Training is usually quite easy.

Americans working the sheep herds named the dogs "Australian shepherds" because of the dogs previous residence. The rugged terrain of the country was demanding on the breed, and it was crossed and selected for its ability to work in such conditions.

Australian Shepherds are medium-sized working dogs with a robust, balanced, muscular build and a rustic appearance. Their bodies are just longer than they are tall at the withers. They have strong, deep chests and they stand squarely on all four legs.

Australian Shepherds need roughly 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day, preferably with high-energy activities like playing Frisbee. They need a job to do as well, such as daily obedience training or competing in herding and agility trials.

Australian Shepherds tend to have more health issues that most dog breeds. The reason for this is unknown, but it is why dog experts everywhere will stress the importance of healthy choices if you are an Austrian Shepherd owner.

Australian Shepherds are a very distinct breed of dog that combines a beautiful and unique coat with an excellent working dog disposition.

Juanita Ely - one of the very first breeders of the Australian Shepherds - bought her first Aussie in 1920, when she had imported sheep from Australia. Those sheep arrived to the U.S., accompanied by a Basque shepherd and a small blue dog with him.

English Shepherds are similar in visual appeal to Border Collies and Australian Shepherds. English Shepherds usually have tails and a much less rounded mind than many Aussies. English Shepherds are never merle and Aussies regularly are.

Portuguese Water Dogs have very few, Australian Shepherds have quite a number, though not every Aussie goes back to all of them.

You will also find that whereas some Australian Shepherds get along fine with all other animals, others will chase cats and be dominant around other dogs.

The breed is not registered in Australia as a native breed, although Australian Shepherds have been registered by other registries since the 1950's.

As your dog moves the cube around, the treats or kibble fall out. This is a little more difficult for some dogs than the round treat dispensing toys, but dogs who like to work, like Australian Shepherds, tend to love the Buster Cube.

About 1950 the "common" Farm Shepherd was being replaced by the increasingly popular Border Collie, Australian Shepherds, etc. Fortunately a registry was formed at this time, to protect the English Shepherd breed.
