His name was changed to the Australian Silky Terrier in the 1950s. He is moderately low set, slightly longer than tall, of refined bone structure, but of sufficient substance to suggest the ability to hunt and kill domestic rodents.

A standard for the breed was first set in 1926, then refined in 1955, when the name "Australian Silky Terrier" was chosen for him.
During its rather short career, the breed has been known by a variety of names in its country of origin: Victorian Silky, Sydney Silky and Australian Silky Terrier. The U.S. calls it simply the Silky Terrier.

By 1936, an organized standard was established to prevent the Yorkie and the Australian Terrier from further crossbreeding. Known for many years as the Sydney Silky Terrier, the name was officially changed to the Australian Silky Terrier in 1955.
