A cross between the Barbet Water Spaniel and the Poodle, the breed was often bartered among sailors. The Bichon Frise made its way to France in the 16th century, where it was often trained for the circus.
Originating in Spain in the 1400s, the Bichon Frise is a cross between the Poodle and the Barbet Water Spaniel. The accompanied Spanish sailors on their trips and were traded for goods. They became the dogs of French royalty.
It is thought that they come from the Mediterranean and cross-bred between a poodle and a Barbet water spaniel, although others claim that the Bichon Frise is descended from the Maltese.
Using Griffon stock as a breeding base, he crossed the progeny with other sporting breeds, possibly including the setter, spaniel, Otterhound, French barbet and German Shorthaired Pointer.
