Beardies are lively and playful and are very good with children. These collies need constructive activities such as herding, hiking, jogging, biking or watching over other pets to stop them from getting bored.
Beardies aren't for everybody. No breed is. You have to be willing to tolerate -- if not enjoy -- brushing long hair, wet beards in your lap, and muddy pawprints in the wrong places at the wrong time. And you HAVE to like bounce.
Beardies don't like to be confined and may become nuisance barkers if frequently left alone.
Beardies require about an hour of exercise daily in a fenced area where they can run.
Beardies can be headstrong, so obedience training is a must.
Beardies should stand 53-56 cm (males) and 51-53 cm (females). A medium sized dog. They have a long flowing coat. They have a double coat with the overcoat being flat and long.
Beardies make an ideal companion for an owner who has the time and energy to devote to them. They are highly intelligent dogs that need to be challenged constantly to avoid getting bored.
Beardies profuse coats should be checked regularly for parasites and they are prone to hip dysplacia.
Beardie owners should take special note of the frequency of Addison's disease in this breed. Addison's disease is characterized by insufficient production of gluticocorticoid and/or mineralocortoid in the adrenal cortex. It occurs in at least 2%-3.
Beardies have very active and intelligent minds. They need an owner who provides consistent training and exposes them to new people and situations. This will make for a well-behaved and socialized Bearded Collie.
