(Berger de Beauce, Bas Rouge, Beauce Shepherd) The Beauceron is an exceptionally athletic and strong breed with a body structure that is similar to that of the Belgian Malinois. Beauceron are about the same size as a Doberman Pinscher.
The first Berger de Beauce was enrolled by the Société Centrale Canine in 1893. It was in 1922 that the first club for this breed was established, but they were not that popular outside of France.

Also known as the Berger de Beauce (Shepherd of the Beauce) or the Bas Rouge (Red Stocking) for the leg markings, this is a rare breed originating in France.
In 1863, two types of plains flock-herding and guarding dogs were differentiated: the long-coated Berger de Brie (Briard) and the short-coated Berger de Beauce (Beauceron).
It is also known as the Berger de Beauce, the Bas Rouge, or the French Shorthaired Shepherd. This breed stands 24 to 27.5 inches (61-70 cm) in height and weighs 66 to 85 pounds (30-38.5 kg).

In 1863, Pierre Megnin differentiated, with precision, two types of these sheep dogs: one with a long coat, which became known as the Berger de Brie (Briard), the other with a short coat, which is known as the Berger de Beauce (Beauceron).

Beaucerons are good tempered, easy to train, but are wary of strangers. The Berger de Beauce is said to respect only its master, and is not recommended for the weak-willed. Beaucerons are considered the world's most versatile working dog.
