Bichon History
The Bichon Frise made its first appearance in the 14th century.

countries for more than 2000 years and it is believed that these indigenous dogs and the French water spaniel, the Barbet, are the root-stock from which developed the Bichon Frise (also known as the Bichon a Poile Frise or the Bichon Tenerife).

A breed of dog of the Bichon type, Havanese were developed from the now extinct, Bichon Tenerife. Very playful and jovial, they suit the best with little older and considerate children.

The original breeds were the Bichon Tenerife, from the Canary Islands; the Bichon Maltais, or Maltese; and the Bichon Bolognese, or simply Bolognese.

The Maltese came from Malta, the Bolognese came from Bologna, and the Bichon Tenerife came from Tenerife. Maltese have a beautiful mantel of long, silky, white hair. This is their crowning glory.

Historical notes: the Havanese breed was developed from the now-extinct Mediterranean Bichon Tenerife. After the 1959 Cuban Revolution, many wealthy Cubans who fled the country abandoned their dogs and the breed nearly died out.

Developed from the now-extinct “Mediterranean Bichon Tenerife' which originated in the coastal areas of Spain and Italy and was subsequently exported to Cuba.

The Coton is believed to be related to the Bichon family of dogs, perhaps linked most closely to the Bichon Tenerife. The now-extinct Tenerife was introduced to the Islands of Mauritius and Reunion by sailors in the 16th and 17th centuries.
