In 1864, the first dog show in the Aire Valley was held and the Waterside Terrier competed under the Broken-Haired Terriers class (the Waterside or Bingley Terrier name was not mentioned until 1879).

Originating in England in the 1800's, they were once referred to as Waterside Terriers or Bingley Terriers, and gained the most popularity as hunting canines. These Terriers are useful for hunting birds, badgers and otters.

From 1864 on, the earlier whelps were called Working, Waterside, and Bingley Terriers. They were shown in increasing numbers at local agricultural shows at the time dog shows were in their early growth.
