A natural bobtail is a tail which due to a mutated gene grows to a shortened length, or is completed cut off at the base of the spine.

 


The Bobtail is an intelligent, playful, good-natured and enthusiastic dog. The Sheepdog actually seems to have a good sense of humour and loves to clown around. The Bobtail loves to be the centre of attention and can be quite stubborn.

Also known as the Bobtail, the Old English Sheepdog is a dog breed developed in England in the early 19th century for the purpose of cattle herding.

Males generally weigh 70 to 100 pounds(45 kg); females, 60 to 80 pounds. They stand around 22 inches at the withers.

Not only this, but the Black Bobtail breed which was being used as a herding dog at the time, "bit like an alligator and barked like a consumptive", said Robert Kaleski, author of the written standard of Australian Cattle Dogs.

The reverend described a small hunting dog that featured a bobtail and had a talent for pointing and retrieving. Apparently, this breed was quite popular with the poachers of the time, because the dog was also easily handled.

This custom continues in modern times and has led to their nickname "bobtail." The breed was first exhibited in the late 1800s, and by the early 1900s the breed was a popular show exhibit. The Old English was recognized by the AKC in 1905.

It features a natural bobtail. Its coat is medium-short, straight, dense and harsh. colours include red speckled with darker red markings on the head or blue speckled with black markings on the head.The system is level back that slopes at the rump.

Ironically, this custom has continued to modern time and has created the nickname of Bobtail. This dog breed was first revealed in the late 1800's and by the early 1900's it was an admired show exhibit.

In the year 1913, four examples of this small herding dog with congenital bobtail were exhibited at a dog show in Langentahal and introduced by Professor Albert Heim, the great patron of the Swiss Mountain and Cattle dog breeds.
