The Bouvier des Flandres or Belgian Cattle Dog originates, as might be expected, from the Flanders area, between the River Lys valley and the coast.

The Bouvier des Flandres is a large, powerful dog that is also known as the Belgian Cattle Dog. This rough-coated dog is one of the herding dog breeds and as a result it needs lots of space and exercise.

The bouvier des Flandres served farmers and cattle merchants in controlling cattle in the great farmlands of southwest Flanders and on the French northern plain.

The Bouvier des Flandres is good-natured, obedient, and calm. Because of their intimidating appearance and courageous, responsible personality, this breed is an excellent watchdog and guard dog.

The only two to survive were the Bouvier des Flandres and the Bouvier de Ardennes. Both France and Belgium claim origin of the Flandres dog.
