The breed evolved in South Carolina just after the turn of the 20th century from one stray dog that was cross bred with many other breeds to produce an avid bird hunter.

Boykin Spaniel Temperament
The Boykin Spaniel is a really passive but enjoyable and obedient dog. They are really clever and devoted companions.

The Boykin Spaniel is a hunting breed with a sturdy build and compact, muscular frame. They have a typical Spaniel type head with a broad skull, moderate stop, and medium-length, square-shaped muzzle.

The Boykin Spaniel is known for his hunting skills, but he makes just as good a companion to a family as to a hunter, thanks to his smarts and his friendly confidence. The family should be an active one, however; this dog needs lots of exercise.

Temperament: Boykin Spaniel is friendly with an admirable disposition. They have no hostility towards other dogs or people in normal situations. Excessive timidity or hyperactivity is not seen with the Boykin's character.
