The original breed can be traced back to the 15th century in south France where later cross-breeding developed two varieties of Braque Francais.

The ancestry of the Dalmatian is also open to conjecture with the Istrian Pointer, the Bengali Braque, the Braque Francais, the Great Dane and the Bull Terrier being suggested by various sources as having contributed to the breed.

Korthals started with a female who was a Griffon of Barbet origins and crossed her with 20 different breeds such as the Small Munsterlanders, Braque Francais, Otterhounds, other types of griffons, various setters and pointers.

This breed is said to have been created when King Charles X of France crossed an orange and white English Pointer that he received as a gift with a Braque Francais. This laid the foundation of the breed.

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon was bred by a female who was a Griffon of Barbet origins and crossed her with various Small Munsterlanders, Braque Francais and various setters and pointers.

Of the numerous French pointers, most experts agree that these breeds originated from the same stock, the French Pointer or Braque Francais. Each breed of pointers in France is named for the region in which they were developed.
