Briard History
The Briard is put in a similar category as the Beauceron, Picardy, and Pyrenean breeds. The commonality between the four breeds is that they are all considered to be French sheepdogs.

The Briard could be considered a big, powerful guard dog. In men, the program is concerning the identical time-span since the height, but in women the time-span could be slightly longer. The back again collection is straight.

The Briard has been used since early times as a guardian of the flocks and a herding dog. He has been the official dog of the French army and is somewhat rare today because so many Briards were lost in both world wars.

Briards have a coarse, strong coat that repels dirt and water. The Briard rarely sheds if he is properly groomed. Owners of this breed should take extra grooming care so the dog stays healthy and looks presentable.

Briards are sizeable (but not heavyweight), handsome dogs with attractive, distinctive long coats. They are muscular, rugged and well-proportioned. Their muscular necks carry their heads with pride.

The briard is one of four French sheepdog breeds, the others being the Beauceron, Picardy and Pyrenean.

Coat: The Briard has a long double coat. The outer coat is often described as goat-like. It is slightly wavy and is dry and harsh in texture. This breed has long hair that covers the eyes and is usually pinned up.

Temperament: Briards are lively, protective and active. They have a strong herding instinct, as well as instinct to guard family. They are intelligent, loyal, and obedient.

There are actually two types of grey: grey-born Briards, which are called blue, and black-born Briards, which are called grey. The two types of grey are inherited differently. Blue Briards may not be shown in the U.S.

The second suggests that it is related to the Briard and Bergamasco. The third is that it originated from a hairy Russian dog named “Owtchar' brought to Great Britain on a ship from the Baltic.

History
The breed does not actually come from Beauce but in fact from Brie; however, the Briard claimed that regional name first(sacre bleu! voleurs!). Although quite different in appearance, both breeds stem from similar ancestral stock.
