The Brittany, also known as American Brittany, Brittany Spaniel and Épagneul Breton, is a breed of gun dog that originated in the the Brittany province of France and is the most popular native breed in France.

The Brittany, formerly known as the Brittany Spaniel, is the only spaniel in the world that points to game. It is al fine woodcock dog and will also retrieve wildfowl.

The Brittany Spaniel is also speculated to be the offshoot of breeding between the French Spaniel and the English Setter. Relatively unknown outside its native France, the dog was initiated in Quebec, a Canadian Province, in the '70's.

The new breed was originally known as the Brittany Spaniel for its spaniel-like size and heritage, but the Brittany Club dropped "Spaniel" in 1982 to recognize this dog as the smallest of the pointers.

In 1934, the dog officially became a breed within the AKC and were known as the Brittany Spaniel until the word 'Spaniel' was dropped in 1982.

It had been transported to America in the late 1800s and gained recognition by the American Kennel Club in 1906 Some experts believe that the Welsh Springer Spaniel and the Brittany Spaniel share the same ancestry.

The following breeds are designated sporting dogs by the American Kennel Club: American water spaniel, Brittany spaniel, Chesapeake Bay retriever, clumber spaniel, cocker spaniel, curly-coated retriever, English cocker spaniel, English setter, ...

Although registered as the Brittany spaniel with the AKC from 1934, the word spaniel was dropped in 1982 in recognition of the dog's hunting style, which is more like that of a setter than a spaniel.
