Broholmer was very popular for several centuries. However, the population was heterogeneous and far from perfect.

The Broholmer is a Mastiff-typed dog that is large in size and features a strong, rectangular build. They are powerful and move swiftly, and their forequarters are exceptionally prominent.

After the Second World War the breed almost became extinct, but around 1975 a group of committed people organized a group called "The Society for Reconstruction of the Broholmer Breed".
