It is believed that around 1100-1200 AD the Thule Inuit migrated throughout Canada's Arctic Region bringing with them the first Canadian Eskimo Dogs.

The Canadian Eskimo Dog, otherwise known as the "Qimmiq", is a larger breed of Arctic dog commonly found pulling sleds for their Inuit counterparts.

These dogs have their origin in North America. They are very rare and very old as well. These purebred dogs are very treasured for their unique character and the fact that they are versatile.
These were the Tahltan Bear Dog, the Canadian Eskimo Dog, the Newfoundland, and, of course, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. In 1995, Nova Scotia picked the Toller as its official dog, thus marking 50 years of recognition by the CKC.
