The Portuguese Water Dog, or Cao de Agua, is an old breed of a type first documented in 1297 AD. It is believed to have arrived in Portugal from Russia via the Middle East and Morocco, crossing to the Iberian Peninsula with the Moors in about 712 AD.

The breed is known in his native land as cao de agua (pronounced kown-d'ahgwa), which means dog of water.

The Portuguese Water Dog was initially called the Cao de Agua, which refers to its affinity towards water. There are two varieties of this breed, which are the Cao de Agua de Pelo Ondulado and the Cao de Agua de Pelo Encaradolado.

It is known as the “dog of water' (or “cao de agua' in Portuguese). This breed has a special love of water. It was a favorite of Portuguese fishermen, even known for herding fish.

The Portuguese Water Dog, also know as the Cao de Agua, and at times affectionately called the Portie, is known for its exceptional swimming ability, which is attributed to its webbed feet.

Referred to as the Cao de Agua (dog of water) in its native Portugal, the Portuguese Water Dog was bred to accompany fisherman on their boats.

Known variously as the Cao de Agua (dog of the water) and Portuguese fishing dog, these canine helpmeets developed into what we know today as the Portuguese Water Dog, a calm, intelligent, and--of course--water-loving breed.

A hard-working and foсused water dog, its ancestгy рrobably has some Poodle in the bloodline (as you can judgө from its appearance). In its native land, the breed is known as Cao de Aguaï which translates into "water dog".

Although its ancestry is thought to have begun along the steppes of Central Asia around 700 B.C., its popularity was established in Portugal, where it is referred to as Cao de Agua -- Cao meaning dog, and de Agua meaning water.
