The Cardigan Welsh Corgi looks slightly different than the Pembroke, with a longer muzzle and very large ears that have distinctly rounded tips. The Cardigan is also longer in back than the Pembroke, and has quite a good sized tail.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of two dog breeds known as Welsh Corgis that originated in Wales. They are believed to be descended from Swedish Vallhund dogs that came to Wales with the Vikings. The phrase "cor gi" translates to "dwarf dog" in Welsh.

Welsh cattle dogs were мentioned as early as the 11th century in several books. And although the breed shares a past with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, it develoÑ€ed completely on its own in a sÓ©parate area in PembrokesÒ"ire, Wales.

Around the 12 century, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was developed, and was used as a cattle and sheep herder in Pembrokeshire in Wales. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke were officially seperated in the 1930s.
