The Chinese Shar Pei is a non-sporting breed. An ancient and rare breed, the Shar Pei was originally bred to be a fighter and guard dog. This breed does best in climates that are not too hot.

Also known as the Chinese Fighting Dog (dog-fighting), the Shar-pei was also hunter and guardian.
Shar-pei means "sand skin", which refers to the rough texture of the skin and coat. It's pronounced shar-pay and often misspelled as shar-pai.

Likeness' of the Shar-Pei or Chinese Fighting Dog date back to the Han Dynasty (206BC to AD220). Several accounts suggest the loose-skinned breed may have origins in Tibet or China's Nothern Province some 2000 years ago.

Description: The Chinese Shar Pei name roughly translates to "draping sand paper like skin" in Chinese where they were once known as the "Chinese Fighting Dog". In 1978 the Guinness Book of Records listed them as the world's rarest dog.

There are likenesses of the Shar-Pei or Chinese Fighting Dog dating back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), and it has been suggested that this loose-skinned breed may have originated in Tibet or China's Northern Province some 2,000 years ago.

Shar-Peis have been called the Chinese Fighting dog, this is a misnomer of sorts as they are not a dog that will savagely seek out disputes with other animals, they will, however, retaliate with fervour should they be aggravated. IDEAL OWNERS ...

Some were also bred and trained for dogfighting which gave rise to the other name by which the breed was known - Chinese Fighting Dog.

This hunting and herding dog was also known as the Chinese Fighting Dog, not because of its ferocity, but because it's loose skin made it a formidable opponent in a dog fight.

Somewhere along the way, a few breeders in the British colony of Hong Kong acquired a few of these Chinese Fighting Dogs. Matgo Law was one such fancier of the wrinkled dogs, and in 1973 he and fellow breeder C.M.

Name: The name sha pi means "sand skin." The breed is also known as the "Chinese Fighting Dog," according to Wikipedia.

Revived by breeder Matgo Law in Hong Kong in the late 1960's, then brought to the US in early 70's when the breed numbers increased rapidly. Originally called the Chinese Fighting Dog. Accepted as a breed by AKC in 1994.
