(Continental Toy Spaniel) (Butterfly Dog) (Pap) (Epagneul nain Continental)The Papillon is a cute and small dog with distinctive characteristics. Their round, perky face stretches into a short muzzle sticking out from it.

The Continental Toy Spaniel is a result of a collaborative efforts between dog breeding and arts. Painting of Italian artist Titian "The Daughter of Roberto Strozzi" (1542) depicts a girl with a dog.

The Papillon (also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel) probably evolved in Spain and Italy, its progenitors being small Spaniels. However it is France and Belgium which are acknowledged as responsible for developing and perfecting the breed.

The Papillon is a very old breed that dates back to the fourteenth century where they were know as the Continental Toy Spaniel in Europe. The Continental Toy Spaniel had typical Spaniel ears, (hanging down on the sides of their head).

The Papillon is also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel. The name Papillon, which is French for "butterfly" comes from the breed's erect ears. An identical drop-eared variety is known as the Phalene or "moth.

It traces its heritage to the Continental Toy Spaniel and was once called the Dwarf Spaniel. Long popular with royalty and nobility, the Papillon dog appears in numerous works of art. The Renaissance painter, Titian, painted the dog frequently.

Developed from the Continental Toy Spaniel, the Papillon takes its name from the French word for "butterfly" for the distinctive head markings that resemble that magnificent creature.

This breed is also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, with TWO possible ear carriages -- the popular Papillon (with erect ears) and the drop-eared Phalene.
