Koolie History ...

(Australian Koolie)(German Koolie) (German Coolie)The Koolie is a mediumâ€'sized dog native to Australia, resembling a cross between a Border Collie and a Kelpie.

The dog was originally referred to as a German Coolie or simply Coolie; theories vary as to why they were so called. It may be because German settlers used similar herding dogs, or from the word coolie used as an ethnic pejorative.

It is also claimed to be bred from German Coolies in Australia. When Australian sheep were exported to North America in the early 20th century Basque shepherds and their dogs are said to have gone with them.

A few dogs from the German Coolie breed may have come with sheep from Australia.

First there was the crossing of the dingo with an English breed of dog, the Smithfield, and the progeny from these were crossed with the smooth-coated blue merle Collie (commonly referred to today as the German Coolie).

They grow up to be approximately, 16 inches to 24 inches in height. Black colored coolies will normally have a black nose accompanied with black eyes which may have tones of black, sometimes including blue.
