Origin
The Coton de Tulear (pronounced co-tonne der two-lee-are) originated on the island of Madagascar and is one of the Bichon family. The name comes from the cotton-like texture of the coat and the Malagasy port of Tulear.

The Coton De Tulear is a bichon-type breed that is related to the French Bichons and the Italian Bolognese. Some believe that additional dog breeds were also included in the Coton De Tulear’s development.

The Coton is a small dog that is most likely of French origin, although the breed was once the favored house pet of the elite in Tulear, Madagascar.
