Degenerative Myelopathy. This is a condition where the spinal cord is slowly dying. It results in progressive paralysis that begins with the dog dragging its rear feet as it walks.

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) A progressive degeneration of the nervous and supportive tissue of the spinal cord in the lower back region which causes rear leg lameness, weakness and eventual paralysis.

If this is a condition other than arthritis, such as lumbosacral instability, pressure on the spinal cord from tumors or chronic disc disease, or degenerative myelopathy, then a different set of medications is necessary.

The Cardigan tends to be a little hardier and has fewer documented hereditary health issues; among them are canine hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy and progressive retinal atrophy.

A minor concern for this breed is degenerative myelopathy, which is a disease that involves the spinal cord. Occasionally, PRA, or progressive retinal atrophy is seen in the Cardigan, as well as urinary stones.

The Cardigan, which has an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years, may suffer from degenerative myelopathy and canine hip dysplasia (CHD). This breed may also be prone to progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and urinary stones.

Health Issues: Autoimmune disorders, degenerative myelopathy, hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), and other eye problems.
Life Span: 10 - 12 years.
Litter Size: 5 - 7 puppies.

Minor health issues include degenerative myelopathy and epilepsÒ¯. Rarely seen is lens luxation, PRA, vWD, and urinary stones. Veterinarians suggest that thÓ© Pembroke get specifically tested for DNA for PRA, Ò"ip, and eye pгoblems.
