Norwegian Elkhound - breed of compact hound whose origins in Norway go back more than 5,000 years. It stands about 19 in. (48.3 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs between 40 and 50 lb (18.1-22.7 kg).
The Gray Norwegian Elkhound has probably existed in its native Scandinavia for millennia. Archeologists have discovered bones of similar dogs dating back to 5000-4000 BC.
Elkhounds are truly an outside dog at heart and need to have an owner with confidence, due to running off and sometimes tracking down varieties of game. They may decide to ignore any calls or commands.
