Erect(or prick) ears are a serious fault in Staffords, whose ears should be "rose" (like those of an English Bulldog) or half-pricked.

But some of the dogs were rather small compared to the traditional English bulldog we know today - some of them weighed less than 25 pounds.

Originally bred from English Bulldogs and other breeds brought to America from England and Ireland in the 1700s, they were used as working dogs on farms, but also for bullbaiting and dog fighting.

It is fairly well established that one of the ancestors of the French Bulldog is, not surprisingly, the English Bulldog (most likely one of the toy variety).

The French Bulldog is descended from earlier, 19th-century English bulldogs who were bred to be smaller companions and lapdogs for working people.

It derived from the crossing of an Old English Bulldog and a terrier, most likely the extinct Black and Tan, at a time when bull-baiting and dog fighting were two of the most popular "sports" in Britain.

Bulldogs are often known as "English Bulldogs" and are a sturdy, heavily built breed. These medium sized dogs have unmistakable faces that have been used as mascots for many universities as well as the United States Marine Corps.

Developed in Germany in the 1830s from the mastiff-type Bullenbeissers and the English Bulldog to bring down game, to guard, and to bait bulls and bears, the modern Boxer retains the strength, bravery, tenaciousness and agility of his ancestors.

Eventually the English Bulldog was bred down in size and his personality was softened, but the American version remained a larger, fiercer dog. The American version has longer legs and more speed and agility than the English show dog.

Sometimes called the English Bulldog or the British Bulldog, the breed originated in England and has a bloody past.

Apart from these, Boxer, American Eskimo, Bichon Frise, English Bulldog, Dachshund, German Shepherd, etc. are the other breeds that are considered as the best dogs to own. After buying a pet, it is essential to train it well.

Not the Bulldog as we know it today, but the Old English Bulldogge who was bigger and had longer legs. He was bred for a purpose. For protection and detection for the Gamekeepers against poachers.

A true American creation, the Boston Terrier was a result of a cross between an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier, which occurred around 1870.

The Boston was, in the 1800's, originally a cross between an English Bulldog and an English White Terrier. More crossbreedings were carried out and the Boston was further developed. This occurred around 1893.

Originated in England as a bull fighter and is often (mistakenly) called the English Bulldog. There is no such thing as an English Bulldog. They are simply called Bulldogs.

Note that the Great Dane were not as giant as today's Danes and that the English Bulldog and Bull Terrier looked substantially different from today's exemplars.

The American Staffordshire Terrier originated from breedings of the old English bulldog and one or more game English terriers.

Historical notes: Argentine Dogo dogs were first bred in the 1920′s by Antonio Nores Martinez from the now-extinct Cordoba Fighting Dogs, which is believed to be descended from the Spanish Mastiff, Bull Terrier, Old English Bulldog, ...

Recently, many people have tried to recreate the old bulldog, for example, the olde english bulldogge, renaissance bulldog, victorian and dorset old thyme bulldog. The Older breed, however, still exists and may become more popular in the future.

In the mid-1800s, this smaller version of the English Bulldog was imported to France and French breeders bred the English Bulldogs with French Terriers or Toy Bulldogs (again another discrepancy) creating the French Bulldog.

He is to some limits a smaller version of the English Bulldog. Frenchies makes good apartment dogs, but do enjoy roaming outside on a lead.

It was developed in the 1800s, originating with a cross between an English White Terrier and a New English Bulldog. Other breeds, including the Staffordshire Terrier and the Spanish Pointer, were subsequently added to the mix.

The Bulldog (also called the English bulldog) is a muscular and affectionate dog with a sweet disposition. This companion dog has a large head, short muzzle, short legs, a powerful body, and wrinkled skin.
