The coat for the English Coonhound is brief and hard. Coat colors include: blue and light ticked, red-colored and light ticked, tri-colored with ticking, red-colored and white, and light and black.

The breed originated in the southern United States where many varieties of dogs were cross bred to supply a breed suitable for trailing and treeing many different types of animals.
English Coonhounds are energetic, intelligent and active. Their great senses make them excellent hunters. This breed is extremely fast, hot-trailing competitive type coonhounds. Very devoted to its family, it makes a good companion dog.
English Coonhounds are not high maintenance when it comes to grooming. All you need to do is to use a firm bristle brush to comb/brush its coat. Shampooing it can be done on an as needed basis.
The English Coonhound is said to share the same history as all other coonhound breeds. Most coonhounds (with the exception of the Plott Hound) are descendants of the English Foxhound.
American English Coonhounds are used to track and hunt raccoons, opossums, cougars, deers, boars, bobcats and various species of bear. It excels in both performance and conformation in field trial events.
American English Coonhounds are famed for being pleasant, alert, and sociable, both with humans and other dogs. Their love of hunting makes them great working dogs, but their love of humans also makes them wonderful companions.
