The breed is the only dog that hails from Estonia where many different types of hounds were cross-bred to form a hunting breed over 17 inches so that hunting would be legal for Estonian hunters again.
Estonian Hounds needs lots of exercise (at least one 1.5 hour long walk a day). The Estonian Hound is an energetic working dog with enormous stamina.

The Estonian Hound is the only breed to be developed in Estonia. For this reason, many consider the Estonian Hound to be the national breed of Estonia.
