The Fell Terrier does not do well with other animals since they were bred for hunting purposes. Usually, this dog runs after anything that is moving. The Patterdale Terrier chases any mammal that comes within sight.

(Black Fell Terrier)The Patterdale Terrier is a small dog with a square head. Stretching from their head is their short muzzle. The breed’s almond shaped eyes are set deep into their head and are usually dark colored.

Avid terrier people in Yorkshire and the Lake District breed strictly working stock, generally referred to as fell terriers. As is common with working dogs, they show physical variation, because mating is based only on working qualities and gameness.

The Patterdale Terrier of modern times refers to the mainly black smooth coated fell terrier first popularized by Cyril Breay from Kirkby Lonsdale and Frank Buck from Leyburn in Yorkshire during the early part of the 1950s.

Several places in the Lake District lent their names to the breed - Patterdale terrier, Fell terrier, Eltewater terrier - before it became known by the catchall title, Lakeland terrier.

Even 20th century farmers depend on organized fox-hound hunts to diminish the numbers of foxes that prey on their sheep, and the fox-hounds depend on fell terriers to extricate foxes from deep crevices in the rock.

In the 1990s the breed was developed in Scotland by interbreeding the Lucas Terrier, the Jack Russell Terrier, and various Fell Terriers to create a better working terrier.

Originally referred to as Elterwater, Patterdale, and Fell Terrier, it was formally recognized as the Lakeland Terrier in 1921. The American Kennel Club would later register the breed in 1934.

Historical notes: said to be a descendant of old English Black and Tan and Fell Terriers; by 1925 the breed had been cross-bred with the Fox Terrier and Airedale Terrier.
