The breed makes the ideal outside companion. It is active, cold-proof, and water-proof, and will gladly accompany people on walking or running trips. It is one of two breeds permitted to reside outdoors in Finland.

The breed originated with the Sami people of the areas now known as Finland, Sweden, Russia, and Norway, where they were and still are an important part of reindeer herding.

Finnish Lapphunds are really trainable. This is because most of the time they do obey but are sometimes stubborn.
Temperament: Finnish Lapphunds are friendly, intelligent and vocal. They like to bark at unusual things, making them an ideal watch dog. They have an instinct to herd, although it may be more diminished than it used to be.

The heavy coat of this breed doesn't tend to mat, so grooming is easier than one might think.
