Like many of the French hounds, the Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie looks elegant and delicate. Its English heritage gives it a bit more robustness. The head slopes gently to the muzzle, which is moderately long.

This aristocratic French hound is an easy keeper with a charming personality.

History: Bluetick Coonhounds descended from the American Foxhound, various French hounds such as the Blue Gascon, the Porcelaine, the Saintongeois, and other French Staghounds. Many of these breeds were already in the U.S.

The Foxhound originated in Britain and is believed to have evolved from the crossing of local dogs with imported French hounds and the later admixture of Greyhound, Bulldog, and Fox Terrier blood.

It is also believed that other ancestors of the breed include the English foxhound, curs, and several breeds of other French hounds.

The Bluetick Coonhound, which probably originated in Louisiana, is thought to be bred from English foxhounds, cur dogs, and the Bleu Gascogne French hound.

The Bluetick Coonhound was bred by crossing French hounds, foxhounds, curs, and English coonhounds.

This marvelous Foxhound is directly descended from English hounds brought to America in 1650 and bred over a century later to a French hound sent as a gift by Lafayette to George Washington.

The American Foxhound was developed from English and French hounds that were brought to the United States. They were originally used to hunt Indians.

After Duke left, near Poitou, where was the hunting, appeared a lot of litters of British-French hounds, which may ascend the roots of some modern breeds.

The American Foxhound originated when English and French hounds imported to the United States were interbred. He has an excellent nose, and is very fast when giving chase. He has great stamina for running and a musical bay.

The Bluetick Hound can be traced back to the Bleu Gascogne French hounds. The breed was first registered in the United Kennel Club in 1946 as a separate breed, but originally fell under the English Foxhound and Coonhound.

This breed is one of the small varieties of the French hounds. They date back to the 16th century, where they were used to hunt small game and travel the difficult lands of the Vendeen Region.

The Bluetick Coonhound was developed through the crossing of Foxhounds, Curs, French Hounds, and English Coonhounds. This selective breeding took place in Louisiana.

The English foxhound, whose origins probably go back to French hounds of the 14th cent., was first used in packs to hunt foxes in the mid-17th cent.

Overview: Originating in Louisiana, the Bluetick Coonhounds ancestry can be traced back to the Bleu Gascogne French hounds. A born hunter, this breed excelled in tracking and treeing raccoon, opossum, bear, and cougar.

Breeds that are likely to have played a part in its make-up include the Saint Hubert or other French hounds, Short-haired Pointers, Spanish Pointers, Bloodhounds, and German Schweisshunds.

Historical notes: Bluetick Coonhound dogs can trace their beginnings to the Bleu Gascogne French Hounds. They are recognized by the UKC, the Australian National Kennel Council, and the New Zealand Kennel Club.
