GDV

Dog Gazelle HoundGerman Boxer

Is GDV serious?
Yes. This is probably one of the most serious non-traumatic conditions. Veterinary help is needed without delay.
Are some dogs more prone than others?

GDV can be quickly fatal, but if caught in time a prodedure called gastropexy, in which the stomach is surgically tacked to the abdominal wall, can be performed. This surgery radically decreases the possibilty of GDV recurrence.

GDV occurs when the stomach is filled with air and it rotates on itself, effectively shutting off the blood supply. Without a blood supply, the tissue begins to die almost immediately.

GDV is a true emergency. If you know or even suspect your dog has bloat, immediately call your veterinarian or emergency service. Do not attempt home treatment.
