The German Spaniel is a particular breed that was developed in Germany as a gun dog. The medium-sized German Spaniel excels at any hunting, weighing 44 to 66 pounds and standing 17 to 21 inches tall.

In Germany, where the German Spaniel was originally bred, it is called the Deutscher Wachtelhund. It is also known as Deutscher Wachtel and German Quail Dog. It was bred as a gun dog, to be used in hunting both small and large game.

(German Spaniel, Deutscher Wachtel) The Deutscher Wachtelhund is a medium-sized gundog with sturdy bone structure and a muscular build. They are about twice as long as they are tall, and they are a bit larger that the Springer Spaniel.

The smooth Dachshund probably was the original, with longhairs either a result of mutation and selective breeding or of crossbreeding, perhaps with a German spaniel.
