The breed was first popular in Holland for being a perfect house pet as well as a good guard dog, the German Wolfspitz also became the symbol of rebels who were trying to overthrow the House of Orange.
The German Wolfspitz and the Dutch Keeshond, apparently, have a common origin, but their breeding was going on several somewhat independent directions. The Keeshond became finally a companion dog, the best friend of the whole family.
(Wolfspitz) (Chien Loup) (German Wolfspitz) The Keeshond (plural: Keeshonden) is a compact little breed, and strongly resembles its ancestor, the Samoyed. The Keeshond has oblique chestnut eyes and erect triangular ears.
To accomplish his goal he cross bred Chow Chow dogs with German Wolfspitz bitches and produced the predecessor of the Eurasier - the Wolf-Chow.

" This British dog was the progeny of the German Wolfspitz crossed with a percentage of Dutch imports. After the turn of the 20th century, Mrs. Wingfield Digby and Mrs.
The FCI has been reluctant to accept the standard that has been drawn up for the breed, believing that the Keeshond is identical to the German Wolfspitz. Good natured and long lived, the Keeshond tends to be a devoted one-person dog.
In doing this, Holland began to become more aware of the breed once again. Today the breed is recognized by a number of kennels, but was not recognized by the FCI for quite some time due to its striking similarity to the German Wolfspitz.
