The Great Swiss Mountain Dog can live outside in mild climate conditions, however would much prefer to be inside with its family. This particular breed of dog needs plenty of space to stretch out and relax.
Great Swiss Mountain Dogs however are not aggressive (similar to most of the small dogs) and thus cannot make good guard dogs. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is very courageous and will bark immediately at strangers or weird noises.
As with all modern Swiss breeds, (including Bernese Mountain Dogs, Great Swiss Mountain Dogs, Entlebuch Cattle Dogs, and Appenzell Cattle Dogs) these dogs were used for a variety of duties including guarding, herding, and drafting.
