Is a GSD Right for You?
Only you can decide if a German Shepherd is the right pet for you.
The GSD and Rottie are watch dogs that require you to TRAIN them to GUARD. You must join a club early on and train the dog to bite vs bark.
And you must find breeders that breed for guardian work. Often they sell the pup and training in one package.
The GSD came to the US as early as 1908, but its popularity rose dramatically after World War I, when returning soldiers told of the heroic dogs' work with the Red Cross, at the front, for the police, and on guard duty.
The GSD is, for me, the King of dogs. But they deserve to be treated with the utmost respect and commitment.

My 7 year old GSD had a hip replacement on one side but was still having a lot of pain on the other. Due to complications from the first surgery I did not want to have the second hip replacement.

The GSD does have a playful side, especially at younger ages.
Mixed-breed dogs: Mutts are typically well-balanced and intelligent. Overall, they are truly amazing dogs! Plus, you can save a dog from life in a shelter.
