The Havanese dog breed, also referred to as Bichon Havanais in native Cuba and the Havana Silk Dog elsewhere, is an ancient Mediterranean breed.

Good fortune brought this dog breed back up in numbers ωhen three families from Cuba left for the United States and brought their Havanese dogs with them. It is estimated that they arrived in America sometime during tÒ"e late 1950s, or earlÒ¯ 1960s.

Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, escaping exiles brought their Havanese dogs to the United States, and eleven dogs were used to rebuild the breed in America. The Havanese was admitted to the AKC in 1995.

Like most hybrid dogs, the Havamalt may be a first generation or a second generation. First generation Havamalt dogs are produced by breeding purebred Maltese dogs and purebred Havanese dogs. Second generation dogs are produced by breeding Havamalts.
