The breed first came to the Hawaiian Islands during the Polynesian settlement over 1000 years ago where the Hawaiian Poi Dog was a highly prized companion and protector, but also a regular meal for the tribes.
The Hawaiian Poi Dog is a Pariah Hound that has become extinct. They came to Hawaii with the Polynesians during the first settlement more then 1,000 years ago. At one time this breed was an important part of the Polynesian people's life.
The Hawaiian Poi Dog was clumsy, but friendly and playful. They were said to be fat and lazy and rarely barked. They were fattened up to be eaten by the tribe in which they lived.

This variety of dog has become extinct. It used to exist in Hawaii. The native tribes of this country regarded this dog as a spiritual protector that would guarantee security to their children.
