The Hokkaido originated in Japan. The breed weighs around 45 to 65 pounds and is 18 to 22 inches tall. Females are slightly shorter and lighter. They are medium sized dogs with triangular ears which are upright.

The direct origin of the breed is unknown, but it is a Japanese Spitz type of dog that is distinguished as a big game hunting animal, especially bears.
The Hokkaido dog breed is medium in size, and has small, triangular, upright ears. The small eyes have a rising triangular outline. The Hokkaido has a coat of long, stiff fur, and a second, shorter coat of soft fur.

This dog can be called the Hokkaido, after the area it lived, by Thomas Blankiston in 1869. This is a rare dog breed.
This dog came from Japan and is part of the Japanese Spitz family. This breed is still rarely seen outside of the country.
Hokkaido dogs were introduced into the breeding program. These relatively pure dogs from remote mountain villages were brought to Odate, on the island of Honshu.
Also known as the Hokkaido Dog, the Ainu Dog first appeared in Japan when the Asian Ainu tribe arrived there thousands of years ago. For centuries, these Spitz-type dogs were praised for being dependable guardians and companions.
Akita were later bred with Hokkaido and Karafuto dogs, which were introduced to mainland Japan after the First Sino-Japanese War. In the Taisho Period, people such as the mayor of Odate Town began a movement to preserve the Akita breed.

They are the Akita (large size); Kishu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, Kai (medium size); and the Shiba (small size). The small sized dog has been called the Shiba since ancient times, and there are several theories surrounding the development of that name.
History
The Shiba Inu originated in Japan along with the Akita, Shikoku, Kai Dog, Hokkaido and Kishu, all of which are larger than the Shiba Inu. The Shiba Inu was used primarily as a hunting dog to flush out small game and birds for hunters.

The big guys are the Akitas; the middle group includes Kishu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, and Kai, all extremely rare in the US. The smallest of the six, the Shiba yields nothing in courage or tenacity to his larger cousins.
This resulted in the breed losing many of its spitz-like characteristics. Akita were later bred with Hokkaido and Karafuto dogs (also known as the Sakhalin Husky), which were introduced to mainland Japan after the First Sino-Japanese War.
