The breed originated in the 1900s in New Zealand where selective breeding made for a sheep herding dog that used their bark instead of their bite.

 


Huntaways can be expected to live to be around the ages of 12 to 14 years old. Huntaways are very energetic, active dogs and require a lot of exercise, the recommended way for to exercise a Huntaway is to let him or her to run freely.

The Huntaway was bred to be a working dog and enjoys an active lifestyle. They are known to work for endless hours. They are best suited for a home with a large yard.

New Zealand Huntaway
One of the only breeds of dogs to have been a distinct one since the 1900's is the New Zealand Huntaway. They have, however, not yet been given recognition by any New Zealand kennel club.

One was smaller and lighter boned and was used for herding flocks in the Highlands and for huntaways. Huntaways involved the dog and the shepherd working behind the sheep and having the dog work back and forth, barking continuously.
