Some Iceland dogs may have also played a role, and perhaps even a black and tan King Charles spaniel. The paucity of vegetation favored smaller livestock, and the animals needed to herd them were proportionately smaller.
These small dogs became further developed on the Shetland Islands from their earlier Collie style and it is also believed that the black and tan King Charles Spaniel and some Iceland dogs have had a role in their development.
The Norwegian Buhund is a spitz type, and bears a strong resemblance to the Iceland Dog. The Icelandic Sagas record how dogs were brought to Iceland by Norwegian settlers in AD 874.
