Intervertebral disk disease Description:
Intervertebral disk disease is a cartilaginous disk abnormality, which usually provide cushioning between vertebra. Most common in long, low chondrodystrophic breeds.
Typical Treatment and Expenses*: ...

Intervertebral Disk Disease: The spinal cord is surrounded by the vertebral column, and between the bones of the vertebral column are intervertebral discs that work as shock absorbers and allow normal movement of the vertebrae.

Intervertebral disk disease is very common in Dachshunds. Occasionally KCS and seizures have been found in them. Some suffer from diabetes and gastric torsion as well. Double dapples tend to result in poor hearing as they age.

Intervertebral Disk Disease Compression of the spinal cord generally due to rupture of a weak section in the disk.

Health issues:
Intervertebral disk disease, acanthosis nigricans, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), cataracts, epilepsy, diabetes, patella luxation ...

As it has become increasingly apparent that the occurrence and severity of these spinal problems, or intervertebral disk disease, is largely hereditary, responsible breeders are working to eliminate this characteristic in the breed.

Intervertebral disk disease can occur in any area of the spinal cord. It is most prevalent between the ages of three and six years. Dogs less than 1 year of age rarely have intervertebral disk disease. Geriatric dogs are occasionally affected.

The back problem, intervertebral disk disease, is quite common. Back problems in general are perhaps the most common health concern for the Miniature Dachshund. They are also easily injured because of their long spines.

The οnly majοr health concern that is typical of this dog is intervertebral disk disease.

The Frenchie, which has an average lifespan of 9 to 11 years, is prone to major health problems like brachycephalic syndrome, intervertebral disk disease (IVDD), allergies, and canine hip dysplasia (CHD), and minor problems like patellar luxation, ...

The illnesses associated with this breed of the highest concern are intervertebral disk disease, and canine hip dysplasia.

hip dysplasia
luxating patella
intervertebral disk disease
wobbler's disease ...

Other common health problems are obesity, eye disorders such as cataracts, corneal dystrophy and progressive retinal atrophy, intervertebral disk disease, heart disease, seizures, hypothyroidism, and bladder or urinary stones.

Back problems can be as simple as muscle spasms from a particularly energetic day of play on up to intervertebral disk disease which can be caused by genetics or external sources.

Minor concerns: foot cysts and infection
Occasionally seen: patellar luxation
Suggested tests: eye, blood
Life span: 8-12 years
Note: Obesity is a problem in the breed, especially because it
contributes to intervertebral disk disease.

Major health concerns for the Beagle are intervertebral disk disease and canine hip dysplasia; minor concerns include glaucoma, epilepsy, CPRA, hypothyroidism, patellar luxation, chondrodysplasia, distichiasis and KCS.
