In the 1700's, they were known as the Irish Red Setters until they landed in the United States. The kennels began to fill with Irish Setters in the 1800's, with many fans for their red, shiny coats.

Although they were being bred in multiple color combinations, the deep red coloring took precedence, and breeders selected those of ideal coloring for further breeding. These came to be identified as Irish Red Setters.
