The Japanese Akita belongs to the "spitz" group of dog breeds (cfr. northern dog breeds). It is an intelligent and courageous breed, slightly to highly reserved, even with its owner.

The Japanese Akita is considerably smaller, both in height and mass, than the American Akita--as much as 30 or more pounds lighter. His foxlike head is decidedly different from the broad head of the American breed.

The Pinto coloring is not accepted as a Japanese Akita color, but is as an American Akita color. In the U.S., some breeders interbreed the original Japanese type using the heavier American type, which is larger, and allows much more colors.

The Shiba Inu has, in recent years, become a firm favorite of exhibitors, following closely on the heels of the Japanese Akita onto the international scene.

This is not the same Akita as the Japanese Akita. In fact, these two types are nowadays different breeds. The original Akita Inu is now simply called Akita, the American type is called American Akita or Great Japanese Dog (GJD).

Some Shibas have white tips on their tail or on their legs. Shibas are similar in appearance to the Japanese Akita, but are smaller in size. One physical attribute that is unique to the Shiba Inu is its triangular-shaped eyes.
