Note: The Kennel Club and the Federation Cynologique Internationale have recognized differences in type between the Japanese and the ‘American' Akitas.

All except white should have whitish hair on the sides with the muzzle, on the cheeks, the neck, chest, body and tail. Black masks, as seen in the American Akita, are not permitted in the Japanese Akita Inu.
